This website is for survivors of abuse and neglect in State care who are seeking redress from a relevant government agency. Here you can find out about the government’s work to improve the redress system.

Introduction

The Crown response to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Historical Abuse in State Care and in the Care of Faith-based Institutions covers the following three areas:

  • addressing the wrongs of the past
  • making the care system safe
  • empowering those in care, their whānau and communities.

This website describes the Crown response work programme in relation to addressing the wrongs of the past by improving redress for survivors of abuse in State care.

Changes to existing redress systems

Survivors currently accessing redress have a range of options. They can: 

  • Access their care records 
  • Ask questions about their time in care 
  • Talk to someone about their experiences 
  • Request a monetary payment 
  • Receive wellbeing support 
  • Receive a personalised apology 
  • Request legal services support.
